I began writing the lyrics of Holding On sometime in 2015, following the departure of a once very close friend of mine. The song was fully thought out by 2016, and the music was completed by February of 2018.
This song is dedicated to a friend whom I used to feel inseparable to. Times change, people change, and lights eventually go out.
Just remember to hold on when they do. Darkness, too, is ephemeral.
lyrics
I'm a mess, I don't care if it wasn't properly disclosed
I don't know how to go on without you
More or less, now the door for our road together is closed
Should I go on my own without you
Thinking of memories makes me lose pace
Cause well, the past sure seems so seamless
But there's a part of me that I just won't chase
Cause well, we've only scratched the surface
But I don't want to erode by the sands of time
For my attempts reduced to dust
Will I lose my life at the hands of my pastime
To lust what I cannot trust, is this what we wanted?
Tell me why my faith's broken to the core
I gotta try not to stare at the world from a dome
So now that you're gone, it's my turn to stop to roam
I am in the wrong so I'll sing along
Cause I'm holding on until the cows come home
You're at rest, though you pretty much kept our dreams afloat
High or low, they were hard to get through
We're the best, through the cruel tidal waves we hung on to the boat
But the flow never looked so blue
Mystery can't appease my internalized race
Cause well, the future seems so heartless
And there's a part of me that'll take its place
Cause I forbid myself to lose face
But I don't want to erode by the sands of time
For my attempts reduced to dust
Will I lose my mind at a mountain I can't climb
And adjust to a life unjust, this ain't what we wanted
Tell me why my faith's broken to the core
I gotta try not to stare at the world from a dome
So now that you're gone, it's my turn to stop to roam
I am in the wrong so I'll sing along
Cause I'm holding on until the cows come home
We keep our heads in the storm clouds
To live out of thinking out loud
But can we count on ephemeral sparks
To survive in the dark
Tell me why my faith's broken to the core
I gotta try not to stare at the world from a dome
So now that you're gone, it's my turn to stop to roam
I am in the wrong so I'll sing along
Cause I'm holding on until the cows come home
